Hat Trick

Continuing on my month of reflection, I pulled out the first present given to the triplets.  My friend Judy knitted 3 hats for Baby A, Baby B, and Baby C, an Apple, Blueberry, and Carrot.  I couldn't believe how small they were when she brought them in.  She said to me that there were several 'preemie' sizes, and she knitted the 'next to smallest size'.   Here are the hats with a pencil in front for you see just how small we are talking.

When the babies were born, the hats were too big for them to wear.  I know, that's hard to believe.  It was 2 weeks before we put them on, and even then they kept sliding down over their eyes.  Here are pics of the babies wearing them in week 3.

Elsie Day 18

Here are the babies wearing them tonight.  I had to wait till they were sleeping to rest them on their head to see the the size difference.  I put the pencil next to Danny's head as well for you to see that almost all 3 hats together wouldn't be big enough to fit on their heads now. Wow.

I have a few more cool comparisons for next week's post, but for now, let's talk about all the fun stuff my 11 month olds are doing!

Biggest mover of the week is Elsie.  My mother has affectionately nicknamed her 'scooter' because she scoots around in high speed fashion on both her back and belly.  She rolls onto her back and uses her feet to aimlessly push her in any direction across the room.  If she runs into something with her head, like the wall, she simply turns and starts scooting again in a different direction.  Reminds me of that Roomba vacuum commercial.  On her belly, she now scoots with purpose, especially if she sees something she is not supposed to touch.  Wires?  An open gate?  Sleeping dogs?  She is a girl on a mission.  Her second big achievement is sitting.  She has been fighting this whole sitting thing, insisting she can skip the whole step and start walking.  Early Intervention gives us homework every week and Elsie has had the same homework for over a month- 'work on sitting unassisted'.  Until this week, this homework was a nightmare.  As soon as you would put her on her bum, she would scream in disapproval, arch her back, lock her legs and lift her bum up.  Good times.  Well after a month of being 'temosa' as my husband says, which he follows up with 'like her mother', she had an epiphany that sitting needs to happen in the developmental ladder.  One day she just was scooting on her belly, stopped and turned and sat up.  She kept one hand down for balance for about 2 days, then on the third day...kaboom....expert sitter.  Finally, she decided that since she mastered belly and back crawling, and sitting unassisted, that she mine as well pull herself up to standing.  No practice, just reached forward and yanked herself up to play on the music table.  She even lowered herself down instead of taking the Nestea plunge.  That little girl is a mover and a shaker.  Ay yi yi.

Danny is practicing his climbing and standing skills.  Early Intervention called him a developmental superstar this week.  He's very confident in his crawl and sit.  She said he has good form, so he's got that going for him.  He'll try climbing up anything that is in front of him, and he has a good grip, so he holds on for dear life once he is up.  And he giggles with pride while he is standing there.

Sammy is so laid back.  He is so excited that while Elsie and Danny are focused on standing and climbing, that leaves all the toys on the floor for him to play with!  Score! His big thing is playing 'fort'.  He crawls under everything and then hangs out and plays.  Under the swing, in the bottom of the exersaucer, under the coffee table, you get the idea.  It's pretty cool to watch.  He has also gotten real good at alternating his arms and legs in his crawl, so now he can race to a toy that someone else is going for and win!  He is very excited that Vova has brought the jumpy from her house and he can bounce and dance.  See the video below.

We got some new bath seats this week!  Babies were getting too big to bathe in the kitchen sink, so we moved to the bath tub.  Let the fun begin!  Sammy thinks it is the coolest!  He splashes from the first moment in to the last moment out.  Danny likes to touch everyone else's seat to make sure it is the same as his.  Elsie is just plain indifferent to the whole situation.

And in other news...we met some cool new friends.  Another set of triplets that are 10 months old live in Dartmouth, and we got to hang out and go for a walk!  They are also 2 boys and a girl, Ajax, Nico, and Francesca!  Their mom Robin is also very cool, and we are hoping to make a weekly play date.
